Al Areesh

Al Areesh takes its name from a traditional Arabian house built of palm fronds, and the interior plays the theme: hanging palm leaves, Turkish-style lamps and a modest four-table dining area that makes the place feel more living room than restaurant. Tucked on Khalifa Street in central Al Ain, it runs primarily as a takeaway specialist - a steady stream of shawarma and wrap orders moves through the counter throughout the day - with a small sit-down section that fills quickly. Parking is limited, cards are often not accepted, so arrive ready with cash. The kitchen does what it does exceptionally well. Every table receives a complimentary plate of fresh vegetables, pickles and warm flat bread on arrival, which alone rewards sitting in. The moutabal and fattoush (scattered with pomegranate seeds and finished with a bright, acidic dressing) are the two mezze dishes that guests consistently rate among the best in Al Ain. The shawarma counter is run by a veteran chef whose technique shows in the meat and Arabic shawarma plates, and the shrimp sandwich and chicken Mexican kalaj are the two wraps worth ordering off the beaten path. For larger appetites, the Al Areesh mixed grill and lamb chops, from a properly hot charcoal, are the standout mains. The stuffed lamb biryani when available is another house signature. Juices are made fresh: the pomegranate, watermelon and lemon-mint are all excellent. Service is fast on takeaway and functional rather than effusive at the tables - waiters can feel slightly distracted by the takeaway flow, particularly around peak lunch and iftar hours. Portions are generous enough that most orders produce leftovers, and prices are genuinely fair - two diners typically eat a full mezze-and-grill meal with juices for around 120 AED. A sensible choice when you want honest Lebanese cooking without the hotel overhead.
